On november the 13th of 2014, Handiamo! organized a disability awareness event for Albi’s Manpower agency and Cap Emploi Tarn through table tennis. Thu Kamkasomphou, who has one of the best french record (World n°1 of disable table tennis, double Paralympic Champion, multi-medalist during the World Championships and European Championships) participated in the event with her coach Véronique Prigent.
The event, which took place in the « Pavillon d’Honneur » of Albi, has been preceded by a press conference held for the 18th edition of the Week for Disable Person Employment, with Mr. Hervé Tourmente, deputy-prefect and General Secretary of Tarn prefecture, and with some professional rugby players of Albi Sporting Club.
More than 160 people were involved in the event, with many CEOs, institutional clients, collaborators of Cap Emploi Tarn and Agefiph, as well as collaborators of Castres and Albi’s MAnpower agencies.
People played table tennis while living Thu Kamkasomphou’s disability, with weights on their ankles.
During this introduction, Mrs. Stéphanie Guiraud-Chaumeil (Albi’s Mayor), Mr. Hervé Tourmente (Tarn Deputy-Prefect) et Mr. Michel Franques (Albi’s Mayor assistant in charge of sports) have particularly appreciated the disability simulation and have demonstrated good table tennis and adaptation skills.
Following this disability simulation, many people, with some professional Albi rugby players, have faced the Paralympic Champion Thu Kamkasomphou.
Spectators have then watched an exhibition between Thu Kamkasomphou and her coach, which left its mark on people’s minds thanks to the exceptional level of practice that demonstrated how a disable person can be performant.
A conference-debate has then been held, where many questions have been asked to the Paralympic Champion and her coach, such as :
– How did you bounce back after the appearance of your disease ?
– How did you become performant at such a high level during all that years ?
– How did your integration took place in your company ?
– How do you analyze the media-centred evolution of disabled sports ?
– Question asked to Thu Kamkasomphou’s coach : Could you please describe us the management specificities of a disabled person ? What are the mistakes to avoid ?
During the dining cocktail that ended the event, people continued exchanging with Thu Kamkasomphou. They were also able to take pictures with the Paralympic medals and to get personal dedications.
The natural, the accessibility and the generosity of Thu Kamkasomphou left their mark in people’s minds.
Testimony of Fabrice Moro, Employment Manager at Manpower, Garonne sector :
« The animation has been a real success in terms of local communication, customer satisfaction, new prospects et deploying new local institutional clients. We gave a positive and optimistic image of disability thanks to your animation. The dynamism and the originality of the event have delighted all the participants. This operation gave a social and committed image of Manpower, unfortunately ofter perceived as an « interim agency » instead of a company based on the quality of recruitment and the commitment in social areas such as diversity.
Thank you because I enjoyed a lot everyone’s involvement. »
